City Celebrates National Bike Month with Bike Light Giveaway and “WeHo Bike Hub”
May is National Bike Month and the City of West Hollywood is celebrating the benefits of bicycling by encouraging community members to leave their cars at home and hop on a bicycle to get to work or to grab a bite to eat across town.
A free Bike Light Giveaway will take place on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at 4:30 p.m. on the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and N. Vista Street. Members of the West Hollywood Bicycle Coalition, the City’s Public Safety Commission, the City’s Transportation Commission, and Block by Block Security Ambassadors will join City staff in encouraging safe cycling by providing riders who have their bikes with them with free bicycle lights, while supplies last. The Bike Light Giveaway will also provide an opportunity for cyclists to learn more information about cycling in the City of West Hollywood.
On Thursday, May 18, 2017, the City will host a “WeHo Bike Hub” from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the sidewalk plaza at 8743 Santa Monica Boulevard, near the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and Hancock Avenue. The Bike Hub will be a festive spot for cyclists to gather, hydrate, and refuel.
The Bike Hub will feature representatives from the City of West Hollywood and the West Hollywood Bicycle Coalition, who will provide bike-safety information and materials. The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf will supply coffee and snacks, and there will be boxes of Pocky, courtesy of Glico. Participants will be encouraged to upload photos and to provide social media updates with the hashtag #bikeweho.
Members of the community who would like to try WeHo Pedals, the City of West Hollywood’s bike share program, will be able to do so for free on Bike to Work Day. WeHo Pedals will offer free ride time for new and existing members all day on Thursday, May 18, 2017. All out-of-hub and out-of-system area fees will still apply.
The City of West Hollywood launched WeHo Pedals in August 2016. WeHo Pedals offers 150 “Smart Bikes” at 18 stations throughout West Hollywood, enabling car-free commutes and affordable short trips around town. The WeHo Pedals service area includes the entire City of West Hollywood and nearby areas such as the City of Beverly Hills, The Grove, and the Hollywood & Highland shopping area and Metro Red Line Station.
