West Hollywood Councilmember Lindsey Horvath encourages support of the documentary film 8: The Mormon Proposition which opened in select theatres and Movies on Demand on June 18th. 8: The Mormon Proposition exposes the historic involvement of the Mormon Church’s leadership in the promotion and passage of California’s Proposition 8, the ballot measure that outlawed same-sex marriage. The film features the decision of two Mormon gay men to get married in San Francisco, and the challenges they face as people of faith who oppose the religion’s decades-long campaign against gay rights.
“This gripping and emotional film highlights the importance of separating Church and State, and the need to support people of all faiths who are fighting for full equality,” said West Hollywood Councilmember Lindsey Horvath. “8: The Mormon Proposition bravely examines the immense resources, energy and influence behind the hateful Prop 8,” continued Councilmember Horvath.
The Mormon Church’s involvement in Proposition 8 was unprecedented. In addition, due to failure in accurately reporting all campaign contributions, the Church was fined by the California Fair Political Practices Commission.
