Photo Safety Program

On May 26, 1999, the City of West Hollywood began its new Photo Safety Program to stop motorists from running red lights. As part of the program, automated traffic signal safety cameras were installed at intersections that had a large number of accidents and red light violations. The Photo Safety Program uses the latest technology to photograph people who drive through an intersection after the light has turned red.

Q: What is the West Hollywood Photo Safety Program?

A: West Hollywood's Photo Safety Program is a public safety initiative designed to reduce the number of traffic accidents caused by motorists who run red lights.

Q: How does it work?

A: Red light cameras and associated detection equipment are permanently installed at intersections that have a high accident rate, and provide 24-hour operation. If a motorist runs a red light, photographs will be taken of the driver and license plate. A ticket is then sent to the vehicle's registered owner.

Q: Why do we need a Photo Safety Program in West Hollywood?

A: The City initiated the Photo Safety Program in an effort to improve traffic and pedestrian safety. The Photo safety Program has proven effective in increasing compliance with traffic regulations, reducing traffic accidents and discouraging gridlock. Drivers who run red lights threaten everyone's safety, and compromise the quality of community and neighborhood life. Cities that have implemented traffic safety programs have reported significant improvements in traffic safety due to a dramatic reduction in red light violations.

Q: Where are the cameras located in West Hollywood?

A: There are cameras located at the following intersections:

  • Fountain Ave. and Crescent Heights Blvd.
  • Sunset Blvd. and La Cienega Blvd.
  • Fairfax Ave. and Fountain Ave.
  • Melrose Ave. and La Cienega Blvd.
  • La Brea Ave. and Fountain Ave.

Q: What do I do if I get a citation?

A: A citation issued through the West Hollywood Photo Safety Program is the same as any other traffic citation issued within our City's limits. You can pay the fine, which is established by state law at $380, or you can appear in court.

You may see the photographs of your violation. Contact (877) 786-7234 to make an appointment.

Q: What if I wasn't the driver of my vehicle?

A: If you are the vehicle's registered owner and someone else was driving your car, you may complete a portion of the citation that identifies the driver and return it by mail. The ticket can be dismissed and reissued to the person who was driving your car.
