Public Hearing Regarding the Operation of Bicycles on City Sidewalks and Online Survey

The City of West Hollywood's Transportation Commission held a public hearing on the operation of bicycles and other non-pedestrian transportation devices on City sidewalks at its regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, August 15, 2007. The purpose of the public hearing was to develop policies which create a balance between the City's desire to encourage riding bicycles as a viable transportation option with the public safety issues created when bicycles interact with pedestrians and automobiles.

Other issues discussed at the Transportation Commission public hearing included:

  • a review of the City's current ordinance which prohibits bicyclists from riding on City sidewalks;

  • Sheriff's Department enforcement of the bicycle ordinance;

  • bicycle signage; and

  • development of a public education campaign on bicycle awareness for both bicyclists and drivers.

Public comment regarding the current and proposed new ordinance as well as the use of other non-motorized transportation devices including skateboards and scooters on City sidewalks was welcome. The Transportation Commission will consider all public comments in developing their recommendations to the West Hollywood City Council.
