Sewer Cleaning and Video Inspection Alert

Starting on Monday, November 5, 2007, the City's contractor National Plant Services will be cleaning and inspecting sewers located in the northwest portion of the City. See the attached location map for information regarding the locations. These sewers are generally bounded by Sunset Blvd on the north; Beverly Hills on the West; Hancock Ave on the East; and Cynthia Street or Santa Monica Blvd on the South. The work only involves accessing the sewers via manholes….no trenching of the streets. From day to day, the contractor crews will be working their way from manhole to manhole, moving from the west to east. The sewers remain operational throughout the work, customers will not have any impact to their sewer services.

Nearly all of the work will be done weekdays, from 8am to 4:30pm. However, for the work in San Vicente Blvd and Cynthia Street, the contractor is contemplating nighttime work due to pipe size, fire station access, and traffic safety reasons. Information regarding the schedule of any nighttime work will be sent out as an update later. The overall project will be completed in about 4 weeks.

The City sewer system is nearly 80 years old. The purpose of this inspection work is to identify locations where the sewers are in need of repairs. A follow up project will be initiated in Spring of 2008 for rehabilitation of sewers identified as deficient during this inspection. We are in the process of implementing a program to inspect and repair approximately 10% of the citywide sewer system each year.

Please note that the City owned sewers are only the mainline pipes, typically located out in the middle of the street. The connecting pipe (also known as a "lateral") between a private building and the City mainline is owned and maintained by the private property owner. This City project to clean and inspect the sewers only involves the City owned mainline pipes.
