The City of West Hollywood will host a Town Hall Forum on Proposition 98 and Proposition 99 at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at West Hollywood Park (Auditorium), 647 N. San Vicente Boulevard. Both initiatives will appear on the June 2008 ballot.
If adopted by California voters, Proposition 98 would abolish rent control laws in California. It may also eliminate or limit other tenant protection laws such as these requiring relocation fees and additional time to move for tenants, (especially the disabled and the elderly when their tenancies are ended through no fault of their own);invalidate certain laws against tenant harassment; and eliminate protections regarding terminations of tenancy.
Proposition 98 would also invalidate inclusionary housing requirements that require a certain number of units to be affordable to low-income families. In addition, Proposition 98 would affect existing local land-use planning and environmental protections; increase the cost for land acquisition through eminent domain; and prohibit the use of eminent domain to acquire land and water to develop public water projects.
If adopted by California voters, Proposition 99 would establish a constitutional prohibition on taking owner-occupied homes for conveyance to a private party. Proposition 99 would not affect rent control and tenant protection laws.
