Transgender Film Fest

  • Date: November 13, 2016 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM
  • Location: Council Chambers
    625 N. San Vicente Boulevard

Please join the Transgender Advisory Board and the City Council as they show case 2 documentaries about life in the Transgender community.

Film:  RAISING ZOEY,  a documentary by Dante Allencastre.  13 year-old trans activist Zoey Luna wants nothing more than to simply go to school, learn, have fun with her friends in Downey, CA.  Unfortunately, ignorance and intolerance have not always made this easy.  With the help of her mother Ofelia, her older sister Leticia and the ACLU, Zoey fought school officials for her right to self-identify in school.  Even in the face of bullying and endless teasing from both school officials and students, Zoey determinedly continues to live her life as she is and tells her story in the hopes of helping others persevere in living their authentic lives.

Film: SHUNNED, What It Takes To Be A Woman,  a documentary by Janice Villarosa.   An award-winning and thought-provoking documentary about the trauma and struggles faced by a group of trans women in the Philippines as they compete in a pageant and find strength in their convictions and one other.  This film provides an important look at the day-to-day challenges and brutal violence these women face just to survive in the dark back alleys of the Philippines, a perfect festival selection for Transgender Awareness Month.
