The City of West Hollywood applauds California Governor Gavin Newsom for signing AB 1775 by Assemblymember Matt Haney (D-15th District) – Cannabis: Retail Preparation, Sale, and Consumption of Non-Cannabis Food and Beverage Products – which will allow cannabis consumption lounges to prepare on-site, sell, and serve non-cannabis foods and beverages to patrons patronizing a licensed cannabis retail that includes a consumption lounge. Existing administrative law specifies that a licensed cannabis retailer may also sell prepackaged, non-cannabis-infused, non-alcoholic food and beverages if the applicable local jurisdiction allows. The amended regulation will go into effect on January 1, 2025.

“Signing AB 1775 is a wonderful step forward for neighborhood-serving cannabis consumption businesses and their customers who, starting next year, will be able to enjoy a locally prepared meal or beverage while consuming cannabis products,” said City of West Hollywood Mayor John M. Erickson. “West Hollywood residents overwhelmingly supported passage of Proposition 64 in 2016 to legalize cannabis in California and our City has led the way in attracting and licensing an array of amazing cannabis businesses. That said, our community members and visitors have regularly given us feedback that they also would like to see licensed cannabis consumption areas be able to serve non-cannabis foods and beverages. Now, AB 1775 will pave the way. We’re grateful to Assemblymember Haney for championing this common-sense legislation and to Governor Newsom for signing it into law. It will empower our city and communities across the state to continue to support cannabis consumption businesses.”

The City of West Hollywood had supported a previous version of this law, which was introduced in 2023 by Senator Ben Allen, (D-26th District). Last year, in the face of opposition by some interest groups and due to lack of support, Senator Allen dropped the effort. Governor Newsom had also vetoed a similar bill in 2023 (AB 374: Cannabis: retail preparation, sale, and consumption of non-cannabis food and beverage products), which was also introduced by Assemblymember Haney.
