The City of West Hollywood is getting the word out about California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) implementation of a new 738 area code, which will be added as an overlay to existing 213/323 regions starting on Friday, November 1, 2024. Detailed information about the implementation is provided on the CPUC website.

With new telephone numbers in the 213/323 area code regions in high demand, the CPUC in March 2023 approved the implementation of an additional area code overlay, which adds a third area code to the geographic region served by existing 213 and 323 area codes. The new 738 area code will serve the same geographic areas currently served by 213 and 323 area codes.

When the City of West Hollywood was incorporated in 1984, the City’s local and regional area code was 213. During the 1990s, the west side of the City converted to 310 and, later, the east side of the City converted to 323. Nearly 20 years ago, 424 was added as an area code overlay to 310 and, today, there are many businesses and residents that have 424 numbers in the 310 regions of West Hollywood that are west of La Cienega Boulevard. Now, as 738 is added as an area code overlay to 323 in the regions of West Hollywood that are east of La Cienega Boulevard, the City anticipates that the community will become familiar with the additional area code as part of continuous adaptation to 10-digit dialing for calls.

Starting on November 1, 2024, customers in the 213/323/738 area code overlay region may be assigned a number in the new 738 area code when they request new service or an additional line. Below are some key facts about the 213/323/738 area code overlay:

• Telephone numbers, including the current area code, will not change.

• The price of a call, coverage area, or other rates and services will not change due to the area code overlay.

• What is a local call now will remain a local call.

• Customers in the overlay region will continue to dial 1+10 digits for local calls within and between the overlay area codes, and 1+10 digits for long distance calls.

• Customers can still dial just three digits to reach 911 and 988.

Customers should continue to identify their telephone number as a 10-digit number (3-digit area code + 7-digit telephone number) and include the area code when giving a number to friends, family, and others. Customers should ensure their websites, personal and business stationery, and printed checks, advertising materials, contact information, and personal or pet ID tags include an area code.

The 213/323/738 area codes serve West Hollywood (323/738), as well as downtown Los Angeles, Alhambra, Bell, Bell Gardens, Beverly Hills, Commerce, Cudahy, Glendale, Hawthorne, Huntington Park, Inglewood, Lynwood, Maywood, Montebello, Monterey Park, Pasadena, Rosemead, South Gate, South Pasadena, Vernon, and unincorporated portions of Los Angeles County.
