The National Weather Service has issued red flag warnings for many parts of Southern California due to Santa Ana winds that may bring gusts up to 65 mph and extremely rare and dangerous fire weather conditions. A red flag warning means warm temperatures, very low humidities, and stronger winds are expected to combine to produce an increased risk of fire danger. Red flag warnings are in place through 6 p.m. on Wednesday for the San Gabriel Mountains, Santa Monica Mountains, Santa Clarita Valley, Ventura County coasts and valleys and western San Fernando Valley.

While such conditions pose no immediate threat in West Hollywood, the City of West Hollywood and its community safety partners urge community members to be mindful of fire safety and wind conditions.

The City of West Hollywood features tips for making your home fire-safe on the City’s website with detailed information about safety considerations and reminders to install smoke alarms and test them regularly.

Prevention is the best way to keep your home safe from fire. The State of California has produced a Ready Set Go fire safety guide to assist people in preparing an action plan to respond to the threat of wildfires, as well as fires that can occur in local communities anywhere in the state at any time. Community members are urged to create a checklist for fire safety using the following tips:

• Create a disaster plan that includes meeting locations and communication plans and practice it regularly with roommates, household residents, and family members.

• Keep fire extinguishers on-hand and ensure everyone in your household knows how to use them.

• Ensure that everyone in your household knows where gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are and how to use them.

• Plan several different evacuation routes.

• Designate an emergency meeting location outside of hazard areas.

• Assemble an emergency supply kit as recommended by the American Red Cross.

• Appoint an out-of-area friend or relative as a point of contact so you can communicate with members of your household and/or family members who have relocated.

• Maintain a list of emergency contact numbers posted near your phone and in your emergency supply kit.

• Keep an extra emergency supply kit in your car in case you can’t get to your home because of fire.

• Have a battery-operated portable radio or scanner so you can stay updated on disasters or fires in the case of power outages and keep fresh unused batteries on hand.

During a red flag warning:

• Do not throw cigarettes or matches out of a moving vehicle. They may ignite dry grass on the side of the road and become a wildfire.

• Extinguish all fires properly. Drown fires with plenty of water and stir to make sure everything is cold to the touch. Dunk charcoal in water until cold. Do not throw live charcoal on the ground and leave it.

• Ensure dry leaves are cleaned away from gardens and gutters.

• Never leave a fire unattended. Sparks or embers can blow into leaves or grass, ignite a fire, and quickly spread.
