In honor of Earth Month in April, the City of West Hollywood will initiate My WeHo Climate Action to rally community members to take collective action that addresses climate change and that contributes to the City’s 2035 carbon neutrality goal.
This spring, residents, businesses, and local organizations are encouraged to join West Hollywood’s climate action movement by signing up for the City’s newly launched climate action and resilience platform, My WeHo Climate Action. My WeHo Climate Action is an exciting new platform designed to empower West Hollywood individuals, families, neighborhoods, and community groups to take meaningful steps toward a sustainable future.
This user-friendly platform provides personalized resources and actionable tips to help community members take climate-friendly actions, save money, and build a resilient, connected community. With My WeHo Climate Action, community members can explore a curated selection of activities tailored to their household, track their impact and progress over time, and find a wealth of resources, from rebates to how-to guides. Everyone is encouraged to join in community challenges, collaborate with neighbors, and celebrate collective achievements. Community members registered in April and May will be entered into a raffle to win prizes from West Hollywood’s Certified Green Businesses. Visit my.wehoclimateaction.org to create an account and explore all the climate action and resilience platform resources.
“Every action matters — whether it’s conserving energy, choosing more sustainable habits, or supporting local climate initiatives,” said City of West Hollywood Mayor Chelsea Lee Byers. “As a City committed to reducing its carbon footprint, West Hollywood recognizes the importance of individual actions in substantially impacting the health of our community and planet. Together, with tools like My WeHo Climate Action, we can create a healthier, more sustainable city and planet, one action at a time. By participating, you’ll not only make a difference for our city, you’ll also inspire others to take action.”
In the spirit of proactive initiatives, the City of West Hollywood is gearing up for Earth Month with a variety of community events and promotions in April:
- Inaugural Green Certified Business Proclamation – On Monday, April 7, 2025, starting at 6 p.m., the West Hollywood City Council will recognize the City’s first Green Certified Businesses and will celebrate the leadership and commitment of the businesses that have participated in the first year of the Green Business Program. The City’s Green Business Program is a certification program to recognize and encourage efficient, profitable, and sustainable business operations. Becoming a Certified Green Business means implementing practices that reduce energy and water consumption, prevent pollution, divert waste from landfills, and assist businesses in creating a cleaner and healthier environment for their employees. Visit go.weho.org/greenbusiness to learn which local businesses are Green Business Certified.
- Virtual Office Hours for the Proposed Building Performance Standard – On Wednesday, April 9, 2025 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on Thursday, April 17, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., the City will host virtual office hours to discuss the City’s proposed energy-saving policy that will help the City reach carbon neutrality by 2035. The City’s proposed Building Performance Standard would spur efficiency and electrification upgrades in large residential and commercial buildings that are more than 20,000 square feet. This will help the City’s buildings undertake smart energy solutions and receive support so everyone can benefit without facing unfair financial burdens. More information and meeting links are available on the City’s Engage WeHo page for Improving Energy Performance in Existing Buildings at engage.weho.org.
- 2025 Annual Tree Planting Event – On Saturday, April 19, 2025, at 9 a.m., adjacent to the Plummer Park Tennis Courts located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard, the City will replace a tree recently lost during the extreme windstorms experienced in January. The tree species selected for this year’s celebration is the weeping bottlebrush (Callistemon viminalis). Widely planted throughout Southern California, this tree species is native to Australia. The weeping bottlebrush is a rounded, evergreen tree with a maximum height of 20’ feet. It has a low water use rating and features vibrant red, bottlebrush-like flowers that attract hummingbirds and other pollinators. The weeping bottlebrush tree thrives in sunny locations. West Hollywood community members are invited and encouraged to participate in this year’s annual tree planting event. Supervision, instruction, and tools and gloves will be provided. The event will start with a short “how-to” planting session, followed by a discussion on the benefits trees provide to our urban environment. Community members are encouraged to join!
In the coming weeks, the City of West Hollywood will host Healthy City By Design, which will explore the fundamental role that the design of buildings and cities plays in supporting health and wellness and will look at some of the key challenges and opportunities that lie ahead with respect to future sustainability, climate change, ecological, and resilience and aging-in-place goals that will be pursued locally and at State levels. More information will be made available soon on the City’s events calendar at www.weho.org/calendar.
This spring, the City will launch the GoWeHo Transportation Management Program (GoWeHo TMP) to help residents, employees, and visitors to travel sustainably and reduce their carbon footprint. The TMP will work with developers and employers to provide programs, services, and resources to enable multimodal travel through the City. Learn more about the program and future GoWeHo TMP events on the City’s website.
The City of West Hollywood is continuing to implement its people-centered Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (WeHo Climate Action), which outlines the City’s intended path to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035 and adapt to the impacts of a changing climate while centering equity and quality-of-life outcomes for the West Hollywood community. The City continues bi-annually updating its WeHo Climate Action public dashboard that monitors progress toward achieving carbon neutrality and its 60 programs and projects.
