Post Date:June 04, 2025 2:14 PM

MIMA June 2025The City of West Hollywood announces the debuts of the next exhibitions in the Moving Image Media Art (MIMA) program. Artworks by artists Brian Bress, Eli Joteva, Leah Smithson, B.D. White, and Sara Ludy will display at the top of every hour on various digital billboards on Sunset Boulevard from June 1, 2025 through September 30, 2025.

FRUIT SALAD by artist Brian Bress, is a trilogy of short films that feature a common theme in the artist’s practice – inserting humanity into a digital universe. For this work, Bress constructed a scaled model of the billboard in his studio and filmed a live action sequence of existing within the billboard space and breaking free from the form. The resulting artwork has a 3D effect and is best viewed from the sidewalk at the southeast corner of Sunset Boulevard and N. La Cienega Boulevard. The artwork can be seen at the top of every hour at the digital billboard at 8497 Sunset Boulevard (The Now). The billboard is the city’s first full-motion, ultra-high-definition 3D anamorphic billboard.

Cascading Entropies by artist Eli Joteva examines entropy as both destructive and generative; reflecting on how chaos, while breaking down existing forms, simultaneously creates possibilities for new combinations and potential. The blooming flowers from The Huntington Botanical Gardens are captured using gaussian splatting technology and subjected to various digital simulations, erosions and generative AI rendering. The artwork offers poetic meditation creating a space where viewers can contemplate their participation in these systems of technology advancement and environmental impact. Presented every 20 minutes on the digital billboard at 8501 Sunset Boulevard (Sun Cienega).

The Unspoken by Leah Smithson explores the human condition using portraits, avatars, that mirror an emotional state or frame of mind, rather than the likeness of a person. The artist was inspired to find new ways to communicate beyond language when a stroke took her father’s ability to speak. She invites others to find their voice. Presented at the top and at :30 minutes past the hour on the digital billboard at 8743 Sunset Boulevard (Invisible Frame).

Holding the Atmosphere by B.D. White originates from the artist’s frustration with climate change and shortsightedness. He wants the work to have different meanings to different people, so the viewer relates to the themes in the work through experiences in one’s own life. Some say the work represents procrastination and feeling overwhelmed, others feel it’s about perseverance or overcoming challenges and staying calm. The artwork can be seen at the top and at :30 minutes past the hour on the digital billboard at 8775 Sunset Boulevard (Sunset Spectacular).

Metamimics by Sara Ludy is a series of AI-generated video works that explore the material nature of AI while seeking to unveil aspects of ourselves. Each scene was created using an AI-generated stage performance, combined with text prompts depicting everyday places. In certain scenes, the stage performance seems to bleed into these places. The artwork can be seen at the top of every hour on the digital billboard at 9157 Sunset Boulevard (Streamlined Arbor).

MIMA is an ongoing exhibition series of moving image media artworks on multiple digital billboards at various locations along Sunset Boulevard. The goals of the MIMA Program are to inspire conversation and enhance the human experience of the Sunset Strip.

The Moving Image Media Art Program (MIMA) is a City of West Hollywood exhibition series administered by the Arts Division, as part of its Art on the Outside Program, and is presented with the Sunset Arts and Advertising Program. MIMA offers artists the opportunity, and the funding, to create art that engages with the unique visual landscape of the Sunset Strip. Artists exhibited in the program are selected from the MIMA Prequalified List, a rolling, open-call for moving image media artists, curators, and non-profit arts organizations, with applications reviewed bi-annually by the City of West Hollywood’s Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission, in May and November. The MIMA Prequalified List includes a diverse list of artists of all career levels; from emerging to internationally recognized.
