Summer Sounds will kick off on Sunday, July 6, 2025 at 4 p.m. with Aneesa Strings, HourTheBand, and DJ Novena Carmel. Aneesa Strings is a powerhouse bassist, vocalist, and composer whose genre-blending sound moves effortlessly through jazz, soul, and R&B. A USC and Michigan State alum, she has scored, directed, and performed with artists ranging from indie trailblazers to music legends. With viral presence and critical acclaim from platforms like Essence, Genius, and Blue Note, Aneesa is a rising force in today’s music scene, touring internationally and performing at top festivals including in Newport, Montreal, and at the Hollywood Bowl.
HourTheBand is a genre-blending force from Long Beach, California, fusing the soul of R&B, the bounce of hip hop, and the shimmer of pop into a sound that’s both smooth and unexpected. With infectious energy and rich musicality, they draw inspiration from OutKast, Robert Glasper, and beyond — crafting songs that invite you to feel, dance, laugh, heal, and love. Through tight grooves, lush harmonies, and thoughtful lyrics, HourTheBand creates space for both emotion and movement. This is more than music — it’s a mood, a moment, an Hour worth living in.
This concert will also feature Novena Carmel aka “your friend in frequency” who is the host of KCRW’s flagship music show Morning Becomes Eclectic. A spirited open-format DJ, host, singer, and voiceover artist, Carmel brings joy, curiosity, and a global perspective to everything she does. She has collaborated with some of the most influential brands and cultural institutions, including the Hollywood Bowl, Netflix, Apple Music, Red Bull, the Smithsonian, LACMA, and the California African American Museum. Whether behind the mic or behind the decks, Carmel is all about connection — sharing the music she loves and the stories behind the sounds.
Buyepongo and DJ Jeremy Sole will perform on Sunday, July 27, 2025 at 4 p.m. With deep roots in South and Central America, Buyepongo draws heavily from the Latino and Afro-Indigenous musical culture. Taking their cues from traditional “roots” music of Colombia, Haiti, Belize, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic, Buyepongo creates a very vibrant polyrhythmic sound by seamlessly fusing merengue, punta, cumbia and more! The group’s pulse and power is built around the drum and guacharaca (pronounced: wah-cha-rah-cah) giving them an upbeat tropical flare.
Collecting vinyl from around the world for 30 years, Jeremy Sole’s DJ sets juxtapose global sounds into a sonic collage, blending or simply transcending genre, style, and tempo. Sole has shared stages with hundreds of his inspirations including Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, and more. He was the last DJ to open for Ray Charles on his final concert tour, worked on music for a year with Lauryn Hill, and was enlisted by David Bowie to remix his 1976 classic Golden Years in Bowie’s final days. Sole is most widely known for his weekly KCRW radio show, now in its seventeenth year.
Brainstory and the Motown On Mondays LA DJs will perform on Sunday, August 17, 2025 at 4 p.m. Brainstory is a psychedelic soul trio from California’s Inland Empire. Brothers Kevin and Tony Martin, along with longtime friend and musical brother Eric Hagstrom, blend jazz-trained chops with raw, soulful energy. The band’s roots trace back to music school and local gigs, but their sound and connection have deepened through years of touring and creating together. With two studio albums under their belt, Brainstory continues to evolve, fusing vintage soul, psychedelia, and modern groove into a sound that’s entirely their own.
This concert will also feature the Motown On Mondays LA DJs. Motown On Mondays LA (MOMLA) celebrates the timeless music created by Motown Records from the 1960s to 1990s. Powered by some of the top DJs in Los Angeles, they are known for unforgettable dance parties that unite people through feel-good soul music. Established in 2011, MOMLA is one of the chapters of the Motown On Mondays global family, which has parties in more than 40 cities around the world.
