The City of West Hollywood is proud to support the presentation of a free community screening of the documentary film AIDS Diva: The Legend of Connie Norman as part of the City’s 40^th Anniversary Cultural History Grant program, meant to highlight and celebrate the City of West Hollywood’s 40 years of Cityhood.  

The award-winning documentary film, AIDS Diva: The Legend of Connie Norman was released in 2021 and has been screened to great success in LGBTQ+ film festivals worldwide and diverse curated community screenings nationwide. The film documents the life and times of transgender and AIDS activist and LGBTQ+ community icon Connie Norman, the self-appointed “AIDS Diva” and a masterful spokesperson with ACT UP/LA in the late ’80s and early ’90s in Los Angeles and West Hollywood.

This special film screening event will take place at the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Renberg Theater at the Village at Ed Gould Plaza, located at 1125 N. McCadden Place in Los Angeles on Saturday, September 13, 2025, beginning at 6 p.m. with a reception, followed by the screening at 7 p.m. The screening is free to attend, but advance registration is requested by visiting: https://bit.ly/AIDSDiva-09-13-25. The film will be followed by a panel discussion that will include a selection of Connie Norman’s activist colleagues gathered live on stage. Panelists will include director Dante Alencastre, Peter Cashman, Torie Osborn, Robin Podolsky, and others to be confirmed. The panel will be moderated by transgender activist/artist Jazzmun Crayton.

The City of West Hollywood has been one of the most outspoken cities in the nation in advocating for the legal rights of people who are transgender, gender nonconforming/nonbinary, intersex, two-spirit, and/or gender expansive (TGI2S+). The City of West Hollywood was one of the first municipalities to form a Transgender Advisory Board, which addresses matters of advocacy on behalf of transgender people in the areas of education, community awareness, and empowerment, and makes recommendations to the West Hollywood City Council. As part of its support of the transgender community, the City of West Hollywood has a Transgender Resource Guide available on the City’s website, which provides information about a variety of resources including legal, health, and social services, available in West Hollywood and the Greater Los Angeles area to enhance and improve the well-being of transgender people.

This screening and panel discussion is an official event of the City’s 40th Anniversary Cultural History Grants program. The City of West Hollywood has always been a home for LGBTQ+ protest as well as celebration and West Hollywood was a vital refuge for Connie Norman and ACT UP/LA to belong, organize, learn, grow, demonstrate, and create impact.
