Bus Lane Enforcement Program to Begin Citations in the City of West Hollywood on September 2

Post Date:September 02, 2025 1:21 PM

Bus Lane Enforcement Program Begins 2025The City of West Hollywood is getting the word out about a partnership with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) and its bus lane enforcement pilot program to help keep bus lanes and stops clear of parked vehicles.

Metro’s pilot program launched in November 2024 in partnership with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) in the City of Los Angeles with a 60-day warning period. The City of West Hollywood is following suit.

Metro and the City of West Hollywood are working in partnership to provide the public with details about the bus lane enforcement program. Outreach efforts include information on the City’s news page at www.weho.org/news, e-notifications to community members (sign up at www.weho.org/email), and digital community service announcements in West Hollywood transit shelter bus stops and pedestrian kiosks.

Effective Tuesday, September 2, 2025, motorists who illegally park in bus lanes or at bus stops along N. La Brea Avenue in both directions of travel (northbound and southbound) – from Fountain Avenue at the north to Romaine Street at the south – will receive citation notices by mail. Violators will face a penalty starting at $293 for illegally parking in designated bus lanes, helping to ensure buses can travel without obstruction and reduce delays for passengers. This follows a 60-day warning period, which began on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, warning that future violations would be subject to fines.

As part of the bus lane enforcement program, Metro has installed front-facing cameras on select buses that use artificial intelligence (AI) to detect vehicles that are parked in bus lanes and bus stops. When a parking violation is detected, the camera system documents the violation, sends it to the City of West Hollywood for parking enforcement review, and a citation is issued to the registered vehicle owner.

Any evidence of a violation captured will be retained for up to six months from the date the information was first obtained, after which time the information will be destroyed. Images captured by bus-mounted cameras that do not contain evidence of a parking violation occurring in a bus lane or bus stop will be destroyed within 15 days after the information was first obtained.

In addition, for those passengers with disabilities and other access needs, vehicles blocking bus lanes impact their ability to easily enter or exit the bus. With the expansion of automated enforcement, Metro aims to curb the problem of parked vehicles obstructing bus lanes, which can delay bus services and affect the overall reliability of Metro’s bus network within the City of West Hollywood.
