The City of West Hollywood announces the debuts of the next exhibitions in the Moving Image Media Art (MIMA) program. Artworks by artists Isabel Beavers, Diana Thater, Maya Kell-Abrams and Adam Agostino, Sara Silkin, Nina McNeely, and Noper will display at the top of every hour on various digital billboards on Sunset Boulevard from October 1, 2025 through January 31, 2026. Biographical information for each of the artists can be found at go.weho.org/mima.
Sundown by artist Isabel Beavers is an artwork that plays with the unique design of the screen, volumetrics, and clouds/storms over the ocean. Sundown creates meaning that is quite open ended and poetic: a meditation on transformation, grief, and loss. Inspired by dementia and climate crisis, the work explores the beauty and fragility of life. The artwork has a 3D effect and is best viewed from the sidewalk at the southeast corner of Sunset Boulevard and N. La Cienega Boulevard. The artwork can be seen at the top of every hour on the digital billboard at 8497 Sunset Boulevard (The Now).
Various Untitled Works by artist Diana Thater offers a portal into a 2020 domestic garden in Altadena, California. Alternating between sky and ground, the recordings portray the details of a patch of earth and the expanse of clouds passing over it. The garden features photo-reactive flowers, which blossom at dawn and close at night, animating the day. The dynamics of the wind and shifting natural light tie the ground and sky together while cosmic time, geologic time, and anthropocentric time are evoked. The artwork is particularly poignant now, as it transports us to a time before the Eaton Fire, when this garden still existed. Presented every 20 minutes on the digital billboard at 8501 Sunset Boulevard (Sun Cienega).
As Above by artists Maya Kell-Abrams and Adam Agostino originated from a concept developed with Sadie Wilking. The work explores depth, travel, and movement designed in response to a bird’s eye view. The artwork can be seen at the top of the hour on the digital billboard at 8730 Sunset Boulevard (The Whorl).
Lost Mind by Sara Silkin is a narrative dance film exploration of the psyche. The film recounts the artist's inability to identify her father's mental illness throughout her life. With her powerful application of surrealist movement imagery, she recreates the emotional physical highs experienced during a manic episode, followed by the endless spirals of depression caused by bipolar disorder. Presented at the top and at :30 minutes past the hour on the digital billboard at 8743 Sunset Boulevard (Invisible Frame).
MORPH by artist Nina McNeely is a playful and visually spellbinding performance that uses projection mapping and synchronized movements, to transform the artist into a colorful array of creatures and characters. Inspired by the concept of shapeshifting in both folklore and contemporary culture, the artwork journeys through surrealist pop, a mythical animal kingdom, and into a divine realm of apparitions and deities. The artwork can be seen at the top and at 30 minutes past the hour on the digital billboard at 8775 Sunset Boulevard (Sunset Spectacular).
Natural Forces by Noper explores both the concrete and abstract aspects of life, bridging the seen and unseen through technology. Drawing inspiration from human emotions and life experiences, the artist use a unique blend of chaos and hallucinatory visuals to invite viewers to observe climate change from an immersive vantage point. The artwork can be seen at the top of every hour and at :30 minutes past the hour on the digital billboard at 9157 Sunset Boulevard (Streamlined Arbor).
MIMA is an ongoing exhibition series of moving image media artworks on multiple digital billboards at various locations along Sunset Boulevard. The goals of the MIMA Program are to inspire conversation and enhance the human experience of the Sunset Strip.
The Moving Image Media Art Program (MIMA) is a City of West Hollywood exhibition series administered by the Arts Division, as part of its Art on the Outside Program, and is presented with the Sunset Arts and Advertising Program. MIMA offers artists the opportunity, and the funding, to present art that engages with the unique visual landscape of the Sunset Strip. Artists exhibited in the program are selected from the MIMA Prequalified List, a rolling, open-call for moving image media artists, curators, and non-profit arts organizations, with applications reviewed bi-annually by the City of West Hollywood’s Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission, in May and November. The MIMA Prequalified List includes a diverse list of artists of all career levels; from emerging to internationally recognized.
