The City of West Hollywood has received concerns today from eyewitness accounts that there may have been a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention this afternoon on the 1200 block of N. Gardner Street within the municipal boundaries of West Hollywood.
The City’s law enforcement partners at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department West Hollywood Station have confirmed that Deputies responded midday to that block following resident reports of men in two large SUVs having detained an individual from a small pickup truck, which was then left unattended. Deputies remained with the vehicle until a family member responded and took possession of the vehicle.
According to the West Hollywood Station, there is no confirmation from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that it conducted the detention.
The City of West Hollywood unequivocally condemns such actions. They are not only disruptive and hostile, they also represent discriminatory assaults on our communities. They target immigrant families, sow fear, and undermine trust. We continue to reaffirm: our immigrant communities are not threats — they are vital contributors to the social, cultural, and economic fabric of our city, our state, and our nation.
As a reminder, the Sheriff’s Department does not enforce civil immigration laws, nor do Deputies ask about an individual’s immigration status when responding to calls for service. The Sheriff’s Department is not involved in any federal law enforcement operations, and its focus is to maintain peace, uphold public safety, and protect the rights of all residents.
In the City of West Hollywood, we will continue to raise our voices in opposition to federal actions that violate the rights, safety, and dignity of our community members. We remain steadfast in our commitment to upholding human rights, advancing equity, and fostering an inclusive community for all.
We strongly encourage members of our immigrant communities to be informed. Please review information about your rights and available resources using the City’s ‘Know Your Rights’ webpage at www.weho.org/knowyourrights and through the LA County Office of Immigrant Affairs website at https://oia.lacounty.gov. For members of immigrant communities who may be impacted, the City of West Hollywood’s Human Services Division offers support and services; please call (323) 848-6510.
