The City of West Hollywood will perform a project in March and April 2026 to upgrade traffic signal controller cabinets at several intersections along Fountain Avenue. This work is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to modernize traffic infrastructure and improve safety and reliability for motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
During construction, the City’s contractor will temporarily shut off power to the traffic signal at each specific intersection being upgraded while work is performed. This shutdown will only affect the traffic signal equipment; no surrounding homes or businesses will lose electrical power.
While the signal is turned off:
- Traffic signal lights (red, yellow, and green) will be temporarily dark;
- The contractor will install temporary stop signs at the intersection crosswalks; and
- Drivers will be required to treat the intersection as an all-way stop and proceed with caution.
Work will take place during normal daytime hours, and traffic signals will be restored before the evening rush hour whenever possible. Traffic signal shutdowns and upgrades are scheduled for the following intersections:
- Tuesday, March 25, 2026 — Fountain Avenue & Poinsettia Place
- Wednesday, March 26, 2026 — Fountain Avenue & Fuller Avenue
- Thursday, March 27, 2026 — Fountain Avenue & Vista Street
- Tuesday, April 1, 2026 — Fountain Avenue & Spaulding Avenue
- Wednesday, April 2, 2026 — Fountain Avenue & Laurel Avenue
- Thursday, April 3, 2026 — Fountain Avenue & Sweetzer Avenue
- Tuesday, April 8, 2026 — Fountain Avenue & Olive Drive
- Thursday, April 10, 2026 — Fountain Avenue & Olive Drive (one additional day at this location)
Traffic signal controller cabinets house the technology that operates and coordinates traffic lights. Upgrading this equipment provides several benefits to the community, including:
- Improved Safety: Modern controllers provide more reliable signal timing and improved coordination between intersections, helping reduce conflicts between vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists;
- Better Traffic Flow: Updated equipment allows signals to respond more efficiently to traffic conditions, which can help reduce congestion and delays; and
- Increased Reliability: Newer systems are less prone to failure and allow faster troubleshooting and maintenance when issues occur.
These important upgrades will help ensure that the City of West Hollywood’s traffic signal system remains safe, reliable, and ready for future transportation needs.
