On Thursday, July 16, 2026, at approximately 4 a.m., a major water main break occurred involving a 36-inch Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) water transmission trunk line beneath Sunset Boulevard at Holloway Drive. This significant incident prompted an around-the-clock emergency response by LADWP crews and the closure of Sunset Boulevard for more than a week. Sunset Boulevard reopened to traffic on Friday, July 24, 2026 at approximately 11 p.m.

While the emergency phase of the incident has concluded, LADWP crews will return in the coming weeks to complete permanent street restoration and paving, which may require intermittent lane closures. Additional information will be shared with the community as work schedules are determined.

West Hollywood community members who experienced property damage or other losses related to the incident may continue to file claims with LADWP at www.ladwp.com/claims.

LADWP crews continue efforts to reopen Sunset Boulevard. The street is anticipated to reopen late tonight (Friday, July 24, 2026), returning the roadway to area residents, businesses, and visitors.

While the emergency road repairs will allow LADWP to reopen the street once work is complete, the street paving is temporary. LADWP crews will return in the coming weeks to complete permanent street repaving and repairs. LADWP will coordinate with the City of West Hollywood to inform the local community once work schedules are finalized and to reduce the impact of any lane closures required to complete the remaining work.

Current Status of Pipe Repairs

Following repairs to a pinhole-size leak on Thursday, July 23, 2026, a new leak appeared during testing on Friday morning, July 24. This additional leak was found in an existing portion of the pipe. Crews immediately closed the valves and began draining this section of the pipe again.

From the start, LADWP has prioritized safety, recognizing that reopening Sunset Boulevard depended on its ability to safely fill and repressurize the pipe. Due to the additional leak, LADWP crews are implementing an alternate plan that will allow them to safely move forward with street restoration while maintaining reliable water service.

Under the alternate plan, LADWP crews will isolate this section of the trunk line and temporarily reroute water through an existing 8-inch pipeline. This will require the replacement of a 12-inch valve during the afternoon on Friday, July 24, 2026. Approximately 25 LADWP water service connections may experience a loss of water service or low water pressure for up to four hours during the replacement work. LADWP is making arrangements to contact these customers and provide water onsite to those affected.

Because the trunk line primarily transfers water between reservoirs and serves very few customers directly, this alternate plan ensures that all LADWP customers along Sunset Boulevard – including those closest to the break – will continue to have water service, just as they have throughout this event.

LADWP is coordinating closely with the Los Angeles County Fire Department to ensure that the measures needed to support emergency response capabilities are in place.

This alternate plan allows LADWP to begin backfilling and paving operations at the site and enables the expected reopening of Sunset Boulevard late tonight.

Future Sunset Trunk Line Replacement

Looking ahead, LADWP will accelerate the full replacement of this trunk line, a major infrastructure project that had previously been scheduled to begin in 2031. The replacement is currently 60% designed. LADWP will work to advance the timeline in partnership with the City of West Hollywood. Because this is a large, complex construction effort expected to span approximately four years, it will require detailed traffic management planning, close coordination with community members and businesses, and compliance with state regulatory processes and permitting requirements. LADWP is committed to pursuing every opportunity to expedite legally required permitting and regulatory reviews, including those required under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).

LADWP crews have worked tirelessly, day and night, to make progress as quickly and safely as possible. Update at 12:45 p.m. on Friday, July 24, 2026

LADWP crews are continuing to experience leaks with the 36-inch water main. LADWP is putting an alternative plan into place. The updated plan will involve use of an existing bypass line for the immediate future so the 36-inch trunk line can, in part, be abandoned at this time. This work requires the installation of a new valve. LADWP crews are quickly working on this.

There will be approximately 25 water customers on Friday, July 24, 2026 on Horn Avenue who will be without water for approximately a 4-hour period or may experience reduced water pressure. LADWP is contacting these customers and is mobilizing bottled water available for impacted customers on Horn Avenue.

At this time, LADWP crews remain on schedule for reopening Sunset Boulevard later tonight (Friday, July 24) or very early tomorrow morning (Saturday, July 25).

Update at 8:15 p.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2026

LADWP welders completed repairs to a small pinhole leak on the 36-inch water pipe this afternoon. With welding complete, LADWP crews will begin slowly refilling and repressurizing the pipe while closely monitoring for any issues before backfilling and temporarily repaving the area as part of its emergency response. LADWP will continue performing water quality testing to ensure all standards are met before returning the repaired pipe to service. LADWP remains on schedule to restore the water pipe to full operation and reopen the street by late Friday.

While the remaining emergency road repairs will allow LADWP to reopen the street when complete, the street paving is temporary. LADWP crews will return in the coming weeks to complete permanent street repaving and repairs to a nearby bus pad and adjoining sidewalk. LADWP and the City of West Hollywood will coordinate to inform the local community once work schedules are finalized and to reduce the impact of any lane closures required to complete the remaining work.

Update at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2026

On Sunset Boulevard, LADWP crews continued repaving and striping work early this morning while also addressing a small pinhole leak identified last night at the east end of the worksite. Crews excavated an approximately 3-by-4-foot area to access the affected section and are welding a steel patch over the leak. Once the repair is complete, LADWP will slowly return the 36-inch water transmission trunk line to service by carefully re-pressurizing and refilling the pipeline. Crews will then conduct leak monitoring, verification, and inspections before backfilling the isolated repair area with slurry and resuming restoration work. LADWP continues to prioritize a thorough repair process to ensure the long-term safety and reliability of the pipeline before Sunset Boulevard is reopened to traffic. Additional updates on the reopening timeline will be provided as soon as they become available.

On Santa Monica Boulevard, LADWP crews have completed repairs to the leaking water main on the 7900 block of Santa Monica Boulevard at N. Laurel Avenue. Water service has been fully restored to affected businesses, and Santa Monica Boulevard has reopened to traffic.

Update at 7 a.m on Thursday, July 23, 2026:

The City of West Hollywood and LADWP have become aware of water leaking and pooling in the pedestrian right of way on the south side of Santa Monica Blvd. at N. Laurel Avenue. LADWP crews are in route to assess. Updated information will be provided as it becomes available.

Update: Water has been shut-off by crews to the leaking pipe. Traffic control is being provided. Currently, Santa Monica Boulevard westbound lanes remain open, but eastbound lanes are shut while assessments are made. Please avoid the area during the next couple of hours. Initial assessments indicate that repairs can be made quickly. Updates will follow.

Update at 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2026

LADWP Crews Address Water Pooling Discovered During Sunset Blvd Pipe Backfill Work

At approximately 8:30 p.m. tonight (Wednesday, July 22) following steady progress on LADWP's repair of the ruptured large diameter pipeline on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, crews observed water coming up from the area currently being backfilled and prepared for paving. While compacting the concrete aggregate base in advance of final street resurfacing, water began to pool at the surface toward the eastern edge of the work area. Crews are now excavating to find the source of the leak and assessing the extent of the damage to immediately begin additional repairs.

The extent of the needed additional work and the impact to the estimated timeline for completion is not known at this time. This is an evolving situation and LADWP will provide additional information as soon as it is available. 

Update at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22, 2026:

LADWP crews are preparing to pour asphalt this evening following completion of the 24-hour curing window of the slurry backfill and the compaction of a concrete aggregate base. The asphalt will dry overnight, after which LADWP will begin street striping in the morning along with cleanup and other preparations necessary for the full street reopening of Sunset Boulevard, now in sight for late Thursday or Friday of this week.

As the current street repairs progress, LADWP’s water quality team is preparing to conduct water quality testing to ensure all standards are met before the repaired 36-inch pipe is returned to service. The new section of the pipe has been disinfected and is now filled with water that is currently being isolated and held in preparation for water quality testing. Once test results confirm the water inside the repaired section of the pipe meets water quality standards, the trunk line can be returned to service as early as Friday.

LADWP Pipe Disinfection and Refilling Underway as Slurry Cures

Progress at the Sunset Boulevard pipe repair site continues as planned as LADWP crews await slurry to finish the 24-hour curing period. Asphalt is expected to be poured today, and at the same time chlorine will continue to treat the pipe and ensure it is free of any bacteria. If work progresses as planned, LADWP expects to finish repaving and reopening Sunset Boulevard later this week. The repaired pipeline will then be returned to service once water quality testing is complete.

The large diameter water pipe ruptured nearly a week ago (Thursday, July 16). LADWP crews have performed complex work including pumping, repairing the 36-inch riveted steel pipe, welding the pipe, repressurizing and ensuring there are no leaks, flushing, disinfecting, and water quality testing. LADWP staff have also been responding to claims (www.ladwp.com/claims) and community concerns while coordinating with the City of West Hollywood and other partner agencies.

LADWP continues to assure customers that water remains safe to drink and there are no service interruptions expected as this work approaches completion. Customers are still urged to conserve water to help avoid low-pressure periods during high demand.

Significant Progress is Being Made by LADWP on Slurry Backfilling

Following the completion of critical repairs, LADWP crews are nearing completion of slurry backfilling at the repaired water main break site and will then begin the process for restoring Sunset Boulevard. LADWP will continue to advise on its progress as crews work around the clock.

Parking Enforcement Changes Extended Through Friday, July 24, 2026, at 7 a.m.

To help residents impacted by the LADWP water main break, the City of West Hollywood is extending temporary parking enforcement changes so residents may continue to access available on-street parking. 

The City of West Hollywood is:

1. Suspending street sweeping parking enforcement in the impacted neighborhood north of Santa Monica Boulevard, south of Sunset Boulevard, between (and including) Larrabee Street and Hancock Avenue. This includes Nellas Street, Harratt Street, Betty Way, and Cynthia Street between Larrabee Street and Palm Avenue.
2. Continuing to suspend residential parking permit enforcement in permit parking districts located west of N. La Cienega Boulevard to the City's western boundary and north of Santa Monica Boulevard to the City's northern boundary.

These temporary parking enforcement changes will remain in effect until Friday, July 24, 2026, at 7 a.m. Please note that metered parking remains in effect. All other standard parking regulations will resume at 7 a.m. on Friday, July 24, 2026.

The changes are intended to ease parking challenges for residents whose access to off-street parking, including garages and driveways, has been impacted by the incident.

LADWP is Making Progress on Critical Repairs

LADWP crews continue to work around the clock to make critical repairs in West Hollywood at the water main on Sunset Boulevard. LADWP crews have successfully installed a new 25-foot pipe segment in West Hollywood and are steadily moving forward with the next phases of the project. During this process, crews are conducting further excavation to locate and seal any leaks, ensuring that all repairs meet the highest safety and regulatory standards. While there is no set completion date yet, LADWP crews remain dedicated to finishing the repairs as quickly and safely as possible.

LADWP Begins Pipe Section Replacement

LADWP crews have begun to replace a broken section of the water line. To complete the installation of the new 25-foot section of the pipe, LADWP must weld the new steel pipe in place, which can take up to 16 hours. Afterward, the pipe will be repressurized, checked for leaks, disinfected with chlorine and tested to ensure regulatory compliance. Water will then be discharged and the pipe will be refilled prior to backfilling and street paving. LADWP is working as quickly and as safely as possible to complete these complex repairs and reopen the street.

CicLAvia Route Update

Due to local impacts from the water main break, the route for CicLAvia—Meet the Hollywoods Presented by Metro has been adjusted for the event on Sunday, July 19, 2026. The western end of the route will now terminate at N. La Cienega Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard. Santa Monica Boulevard will be closed to vehicle traffic from N. La Cienega Boulevard to N. La Brea Avenue. LADWP Crews Make Significant Progress

LADWP crews remain onsite at the location of the water pipe rupture and, overnight, workers made significant progress and finished draining the 0.7-mile-long section of the pipe, as well as the area surrounding the pipe break. Approximately 195,000 gallons of water were removed from the repair site to begin the complex work, including excavation, shoring for safety and beginning work to cut and remove a 25-foot section of damaged pipe.

Sunset Boulevard remains closed to traffic, with the closure area reduced to the section between Sherbourne Drive and N. San Vicente Boulevard, along with nearby streets closed for public safety. The public is asked to avoid the area for safety.

LADWP Claims and Updates

LADWP Claims staff will remain onsite in front of 1010 Palm Avenue, West Hollywood on Friday, July 17, 2026 from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM to respond to questions about property damage and claims. 

LADWP is recommending that residents near Sunset Blvd. between Larrabee St. and N. Olive Dr. conserve water as some residents have observed reduced pressure. Water remains safe to drink. Details can be found here.

The West Hollywood Sheriff's Station is informing the community of updated road closures in the Sunset Boulevard area due to an ongoing water main break. LADWP crews are on scene making repairs.
 
Hard Closures (no through access)

• Horn Ave at Sunset Blvd, near the incident location
• San Vicente Blvd / N Clark St at Sunset Blvd (no eastbound traffic on Sunset Blvd from San Vicente Blvd/Clark St)
• Larrabee St at Sunset Blvd, north side
• Larrabee St at Sunset Blvd, south side
• Larrabee St at Santa Monica Blvd
• Palm Ave at Santa Monica Blvd

Soft Closures (local residents and emergency vehicles only)

• Shoreham Dr at Sunset Blvd
• Holloway Dr between Palm Ave and Hancock Ave
• San Vicente Blvd at Cynthia St, near Fire Station 7

Residents passing through soft closure points should have ID or proof of residency ready. This helps deputies keep the area accessible and secure for those who live there.
 
Residents on Larrabee St north of Sunset Blvd can reach home via Clark St and Ozeta Terrace. When leaving the area, use the same route in reverse, Ozeta Terrace to Clark St, to reconnect with Sunset Blvd.
 
LASD - West Hollywood Station is asking everyone to avoid the area over the next few days so repair crews and emergency services can move freely. Thank you for your patience while LADWP completes repairs.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) is currently repairing damage to a large 36-inch water pipe in West Hollywood (Sunset Boulevard and Holloway Drive) that occurred early this morning. Please visit www.LADWPnews.com for updates.

• Sunset Blvd. is closed between La Cienega Blvd. and Sunset Plaza Drive.

Information for Residents and Businesses Affected by the LADWP Water Main Break (Handout)

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) crews are now assessing the water main break damage and beginning repairs.

The rupture involved a 36-inch LADWP steel main buried underneath Sunset Boulevard in a highly trafficked area of the Sunset Strip at Holloway Drive.

LADWP has confirmed that no water service interruptions are anticipated for residents or businesses, due to a water main that remains intact to serve customers.

Importantly, LADWP has confirmed that water for LADWP customers in the City of West Hollywood is clean and safe to drink.

The following street closures remain in place at this time:

• Eastbound and Westbound Sunset Boulevard is closed between Larrabee Street and Sherbourne Drive.
• Eastbound Holloway Drive is closed between Sunset Boulevard and Palm Avenue.

Water to the ruptured main has now been shut off by crews from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP). Street closures remain in effect.

The City of West Hollywood is responding to a large-scale water main break on Sunset Boulevard at Holloway Drive. The water main break was first reported in the early morning hours of Thursday, July 16, 2026.

The City of West Hollywood’s Department of Public Works is responding to the scene, and personnel are being deployed to direct traffic.

The public is urged to avoid driving in the area.

The City of West Hollywood is working with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) and Metropolitan Water District (MWD) to determine next steps. There is currently no timeline for water main repairs.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department issued a Nixle Advisory – at approximately 5 a.m. on July 16, 2026 – with the following road closures:

• Eastbound Sunset Boulevard is closed between Larrabee Street and Sherbourne Drive.
• Eastbound Holloway Drive is closed between Sunset Boulevard and Westmount Drive.
• Eastbound Santa Monica Boulevard is closed between San Vicente Boulevard and Hancock Drive.
• Larrabee Street, Palm Avenue, and Hancock Avenue are all closed northbound and southbound between Sunset Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard.

As water continues to flow, additional streets may be shut down accordingly.
