Post Date:September 04, 2018 2:27 PM

mindbodysoulThe City of West Hollywood’s Recreation Services Division’s Be Well WeHo series of programming will take place throughout fall and will help participants identify and pursue personal wellness goals. Be Well WeHo will emphasize empowerment, celebration, and connections with others who share the same goals and challenges. This series of classes can provide results that are based on evidence-based practices, which use research from major U.S. universities and hospitals.

The Be Well WeHo series will kick off on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 with the Mindfulness Series of workshops developed by Maggie Thomas, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) at Huntington Hospital. The Mindfulness Series will offer three different workshops; each 90-minute workshop will be offered twice on the same day — 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the West Hollywood Community Center at Plummer Park, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard in Rooms 5 and 6, as follows:

  • The Power of Mindful Self Talk will take place on Wednesday, September 5, 2018. This workshop will explore the power of words and their amazing creative nature. Participants will learn to be mindful about how they talk to themselves and how they design their internal and external world through that self-talk. They will also learn tools to help change their inner dialogue to change their lives for the better;
  • The Power of Health will take place on Wednesday, October 3, 2018. This workshop will focus on mindfully attending to our bodies to create physical health, and as a result benefit from a healthy mind.  Participants will learn how to be present within their body and listen to the wisdom within to create a healthy body; and
  • The Power of Thanks-Giving will take place on Wednesday, November 7, 2018. In this workshop, participants will discuss in-depth how to mindfully and heart-fully look at our cups as half-full rather than half-empty. Participants will learn various techniques to become aware of what each moment offers them to benefit from a more fulfilling life.

The Mindfulness Series of workshops is for people ages 18 or older and the cost is $3 per workshop. Online registration is available at www.weho.org/recreation or in person at the session of each class with check, credit card, or money order only. More information about these workshops is available by calling (323) 848-6843.

In addition, UCLA Memory Training series of classes will teach strategies and exercises to improve long-term memory and the ability to retain and recall information. Developed by faculty at UCLA, this series of memory classes provides practical ways to help people:

  • Keep track of keys, phones, or other items;
  • Retain and recall dates, phone numbers, and addresses;
  • Connect names with faces; and
  • Recall lists without writing everything down, and much more.

The UCLA Memory Training class series will run for four weeks and students may not join after the second session in the series. The classes will, unfortunately, not be helpful to people with a diagnosis of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. One four-class session will be offered in October; the other four-class session will be offer in November. All of the classes in the series will take place at the West Hollywood Community Center at Plummer Park, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard in Rooms 5 and 6, as follows:
