City Tallies Unofficial General Municipal Election Results from the L.A. County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk
The City of West Hollywood’s General Municipal Election was held on Tuesday, March 5, 2019. Operations for polls, voting, and counting were conducted by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk. There are 28,302 registered voters in the City of West Hollywood. As of today, March 6, 2019, the preliminary turnout is measured at 16 percent, with 4,574 ballots cast. The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s office must still count provisional ballots and additional vote-by-mail ballots.
The unofficial tally indicates that incumbents Lindsey P. Horvath, Lauren Meister, and John D’Amico have secured the top number of votes for three seats on the West Hollywood City Council. Unofficial election results, updated at approximately 11:20 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, 2019 indicate that Lindsey Horvath has 2,917 votes, Lauren Meister has 2,708 votes, and John D’Amico has 1,840 votes.
The unofficial tally also indicates that Measure Y, the Cannabis Business Tax, will pass with votes currently tallied at 3,361 “yes” (76.2%) and 1,050 “no” (23.8%). Measure Y approves an ordinance to be adopted establishing a Cannabis Business Tax on gross receipts from the sale of adult-use cannabis and adult-use cannabis products. Measure Y is estimated to raise $5,500,000 annually to be used locally to fund general municipal services in West Hollywood such as public safety, street repair, homeless services, pedestrian/bike safety, and parks, until ended by voters and subject to annual public review of spending and independent financial audits.
Measure B, Adoption of a Resolution approving a General Plan Amendment for the Arts Club Project, is also expected to pass with votes currently tallied at 2,667 “yes” (61.0%); and 1,704 “no” (38.98%). Measure B approves Resolution 18-5104 to be adopted, which approves a General Plan Amendment for the Arts Club Project at 8920 Sunset Boulevard, thereby allowing the project to proceed.
Final election results are scheduled to be certified by the County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk on Friday, March 22, 2019 and it is anticipated that the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will declare the Election concluded on Tuesday, April 2, 2019.
The three newly elected Councilmembers are anticipated to be sworn-in at a regular meeting of the West Hollywood City Council on Monday, April 1, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood’s Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. The Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore will be installed at the West Hollywood City Council meeting on Monday, May 20, 2019.
