Mission Statement and Advocacy
The West Hollywood Women's Advisory Board (WAB) advises the City Council on policies and other issues pertaining to women, advocates on behalf of women's rights, and provides programming addressing women's concerns. The Women's Advisory Board closely monitors and offers input on women's legislative policy and quality of life issues as they come before the City Council. Issues range from breast cancer and reproductive rights, to violence against women in all of its forms, childcare, pay equity, and sexual harassment.
Programs and Activities
The WAB also sponsors cultural programs highlighting the achievements of women such as poetry readings, lectures, theatrical and music performances, and film screenings. The Board helped create the City's domestic violence program and has hosted numerous public forums on various public policy issues. The WAB actively participates and contributes programming for City initiatives including the City's annual Kids’ Fair, the West Hollywood Book Fair and the West Hollywood Women’s Leadership Conference. Take a look at some of the programs and activities with which the WAB is directly involved:
Women's Equality Day
The WAB assists the City in commemorating the anniversary of women's right to vote in the United States on August 26th.
Women's History Month
Every March, the Women's Advisory Board takes the lead role in the City's widely regarded Women's History Month. Programming includes a pictorial display of women throughout history in the City Hall Lobby; banners of notable women hung along Santa Monica Boulevard; the Women In Leadership Awards hosted in conjunction with the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce; various cultural activities and a calendar of events for West Hollywood and the region. The month long celebration is among the most popular and widely anticipated events in the City.
