The "Public Realm" describes the streets, parks, sidewalks, green spaces, and other outdoor spaces that belong to everyone and are available for use at no cost. The Public Realm does not exist in isolation, it includes the context of its adjacent buildings, their uses, and its location in a wider network of public and private space.
High quality public places are vital for creating livable, harmonious, and equitable communities. Investing in quality public space creates tangible, economic benefits -- for instance stimulating tourism, raising property value, and even increasing sales in local businesses.
What are Pilot Projects?
In addition to the traditional methods of gathering public input (community meetings or charrettes), in certain cases the City of West Hollywood has embraced the pilot project - where concepts are tested to validate their utility and determine if they meet the vision and goals of the project.
The pilot-approach can lead to more well-informed, community-driven design concepts through iterative, field-tested experiments. This approach allows for trial runs of novel ideas and new concepts, which are experienced and adjusted in place. This process reveals unforeseen challenges and ensures that the City is prepared to handle issues that might arise during full-scale implementation.

West Hollywood's 15-minute Neighborhoods
Residents, no matter where they live, are able to leave their doorsteps and conveniently access most of the amenities they need to live a happy, healthy life. Developing a City that can easily connect residents to services and amenities is one of our top priorities. These are essential businesses and places we need to live our daily lives to the fullest. They include grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants, libraries, and parks. In line with efforts by cities across the globe, the City of West Hollywood developed the West Hollywood 15-Minute Neighborhood to illustrate the quality access that each neighborhood in West Hollywood has to common amenities and businesses.
