The City of West Hollywood launched its bike share program, WeHo Pedals, in August 2016. A convenient, fast, and affordable service that makes public bicycles available for shared use on a short- term basis, WeHo Pedals provides another transportation option around town and helps promote healthy lifestyles through sustainable transportation for West Hollywood residents, workers, and visitors. Bike share complements other forms of car-free transportation by creating linkages to transit stops and stations that may be beyond a comfortable walking distance, but within an easy bike ride.
WeHo Pedals Bike Share currently offers 150 “Smart Bikes” at 20 stations throughout West Hollywood, enabling car-free commutes and affordable short trips around town. The bike share program is operated by CycleHop, LLC, which plans and operates bike share programs throughout North America.
The “Smart Bikes” used in the system are manufactured by Social Bicycles, which utilize wireless technology to allow riders to use a smartphone app to reserve bikes, pay for membership, and track and share ride data with friends in online social networks. All of the technology is located on the bikes, so they don’t need to be docked and can also be locked to any public bike rack, increasing user flexibility and convenience.
Bike share hubs are located near transit stops, businesses, and other major destinations within the City of West Hollywood. With an expanded system area that includes Beverly Hills and parts of Los Angeles, WeHo Pedals allows easy connections to regional destinations such as Hollywood and Highland, The Grove, LACMA. The system is also linked to the Westside Regional Bike Share program, which includes the Cities of Santa Monica and Beverly Hills, providing a combined access to more than 1,000 bikes, and increasing the cycling destination options of WeHo Pedals members.
