The City of West Hollywood is launching the Green City Awards to recognize projects and practices that demonstrate excellence in environmental sustainability. Please reach out to Erin Hamant with questions at (323) 848-6400 or


Nominations are open to all and anyone interested is encouraged to apply. Applicants can self-nominate or elect to nominate an individual, a business, or a nonprofit organization/school. Completed nominations will be considered for award.

Why Green City Awards?

  • To recognize outstanding environmental sustainability leadership in West Hollywood
  • To recognize local actions big and small which dare to be different and are not status quo
  • To accelerate the completion of local green projects
  • To build community resilience and collectively combat climate change

The Green City Awards will be presented at an inaugural awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 13, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. in the West Hollywood Council Chambers. The awards ceremony will be a recorded and live-broadcast event.

Recipients will receive a formal award and be highlighted by the City.


Three Awards To Be Bestowed

  1. Individual (all ages may apply)
  2. For-Profit Business
  3. Nonprofit organizations/Schools

Considerations for the award are broad and may include energy, water, waste, materials, trees and plants, and much more. The Green City Awards complements the City’s longstanding leadership of green policies and practices.



  • Nominee must live, do business in, or have a connection to the City of West Hollywood. Projects must be located within or inspire impact within the City of West Hollywood.
  • Nominee must be able to attend the awards ceremony or send a representative.
  • Nominee must showcase a completed project, an ongoing project, or a conceptual project.
  • There is not a set time limitation. Projects can be recent and from the distant past.
  • If a nominee chooses to submit a conceptual project, the applicant must include a proposed plan for implementation.
  • Nominee must be able to provide a tour or presentation of the completed or conceptual project, upon request.
  • Nominee may only enter one submission per project.
  • Nominator may only submit one submission per category (individual, business or organization).
  • Projects awarded the Green City Award may not participate in subsequent year nominations; and projects not awarded are encouraged to reapply in future years.
  • Projects must be environmentally-friendly and have incorporated principles of environmental sustainability.
  • City of West Hollywood projects and employees are not eligible.


Award Criteria

The evaluation panel is made up of members from the Public Facilities Commission.

  1. Leadership: Projects that can tell a story of strong leadership, environmental values and a commitment to a sustainable future. Describe which stakeholders and interests were involved and how participation was integrated in the project timeline.
  2. Community Impact / Environmental Impact: Projects that can describe how the environmental sustainability achievement increases quality of life by making a difference in the lives of the people, place and environment affected. Projects should also describe the maintenance requirements.
  3. Aspirational: Projects that can inspire others to want to replicate them. Concepts that can inspire others to want to finance them.

The panel will select one recipient from each entry type to receive an award: individual, business, and organization/school. The panel may elect to not select an award, regardless of the number of submissions. Contact with members of the panel to discuss an award nomination will result in disqualification. All entries will be notified by late-April 2020 on the status of their award submission.

  • Award winners will be announced at the Public Facilities Commission meeting
