The Sunset/La Cienega intersection is widely acknowledged as one of the most challenging in the city for pedestrian crossings. Because of the extended crosswalk lengths and steep cross slopes, the south crosswalk in particular has garnered a great deal of attention and notoriety. Recently entitled and proposed new developments directly adjacent to the Sunset Boulevard and La Cienega Boulevard intersection afford a timely opportunity to rethink the intersection geometry, slopes, and street amenities to better address pedestrian safety, comfort, and engagement with a particular focus at the southwest corner where the slope is the steepest for pedestrians.
