Little Free Libraries are small community volunteer-run book exchange boxes which help foster a sense of community and a love of literacy among those who use and maintain them. Community members are encouraged to take a free book or leave a book. Founded in 2009, by Tod Bol who said “I really believe in a Little Free Library on every block and a book in every hand. I believe people can fix their neighborhoods, fix their communities, develop systems of sharing, learn from each other, and see that they have a better place on this planet to live.”

About the Little Free Library Microgrant program:
From 2015-2025, The City of West Hollywood's Arts Division ran a micro-grant to fund community members installing Little Free Libraries. This was the very first municipal grant specifically for Little Free Libraries in the world, and garnered press in the LA Times!
During that decade 10 LFLs were funded and installed. Four of these are still installed and continue to be maintained by community volunteers as of 2025. The microgrant program is no longer being offered, but you can still install an LFL on your private property as long as it does not encroach on the public right of way nor block any viewpoints from driveways.
