Since incorporation in 1984, the City of West Hollywood has become one of the most influential cities in the nation for its outspoken advocacy on LGBTQ issues. No other city of its size has had a greater impact on the national public policy discourse on fairness and inclusiveness for LGBTQ people. More than 40 percent of residents in West Hollywood identify as LGBTQ. The City has advocated for more than three decades for measures to support LGBTQ individuals and has been in the vanguard on efforts to gain and protect equality for all people on a state, national, and international level.

Transgender Advisory Board Community Picnic Day

The City of West Hollywood and its Transgender Advisory Board invite the Transgender community and its allies to the Transgender Advisory Board Community Picnic Day on Sunday, August 30, 2026 from 3-6PM in Plummer Park’s Vista Lawn.
At a time when transgender, nonbinary, intersex, and other gender-expansive communities across the nation are facing renewed political attacks and cultural erasure efforts at the federal level, the City of West Hollywood stands in solidarity and support with the community. This Community Picnic Day is a chance for the Community to come together, mingle, and join in like-minded celebration of the diversity and resilience of the transgender community. In West Hollywood, transgender people are valued, visible, and integral to the fabric of our community. Recognition is not just celebration; it is a commitment to live loud and proud and a refusal to be erased.
The Transgender Community and it’s allies are welcomed to this event, and are encouraged to bring a blanket, some snacks or food, and co-mingle with fellow members of the transgender community. The event will feature a DJ, free lawn games for use. In addition, the City will be providing a limited amount of free light snacks to those who are attending the picnic. The members of the City’s Transgender Advisory Board will also be there to hear from the community about the challenges facing them.

Limited parking is available at the North and South lots at Plummer Park, accessible via Fountain or Santa Monica Boulevard. Limited street parking is also available. Please read and respect all posted signs.

------------- LGBTQ+ RESOURCES -------------
The City of West Hollywood is one of the first municipalities to form a Transgender Advisory Board (TAB) which addresses matters of advocacy on behalf of transgender people in the areas of education, community awareness, and empowerment, and makes recommendations to the West Hollywood City Council. The City of West Hollywood Transgender Advisory Board meets the 1st Wednesday of the month at 6pm. Through its Transgender Advisory Board, the City of West Hollywood regularly co-sponsors programming, which includes a job fair organized by the Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Transgender Economic Empowerment Project in order to connect transgender women and men with employment resources and opportunities. The City also recognizes Transgender Awareness Month each November.
As part of its support of the transgender community, the City of West Hollywood has a Transgender Resource Guide available on the City’s website, which provides information about a variety of resources including legal, health, and social services, available in the Greater Los Angeles area to enhance and improve the well-being of transgender people. There is also specific information for transgender service members and veterans with legal questions.
Pride Flags in the City of West Hollywood
The City of West Hollywood proudly displays flags symbols of LGBTQ pride in the City’s medians, at West Hollywood City Hall, and at some City facilities. LGBTQ flags displayed on a continuous basis in the City include the Rainbow Flag, the Transgender Pride Flag, and the Progress Flag. In addition, the City’s official flag features the City’s rainbow logo as its main image.
In the late 1970s, Gilbert Baker created the Rainbow Flag as a symbol of hope “for all races, all genders and all ages.” He called it “the rainbow of humanity” and the flag’s colors represent elements in all of us: Sex, Life, Healing, Sunlight, Nature, Magic, Spirit, and Serenity. The Lambda flag, with the Greek letter “L” is one of many variations on the Rainbow Flag that has become known worldwide, and this is the flag displayed in the City’s medians in the Rainbow District. The Transgender Flag was then created by American trans woman Monica Helms in 1999. Most recently, the Progress Flag was created by Daniel Quasar to include a background of six rainbow stripes with a hoist of five stripes representing trans and non-binary individuals and stripes representing marginalized POC communities and representing those living with AIDS and the stigma and prejudice surrounding them, and those who have been lost to the disease.
