Purpose: The purpose of TRIBE Gay Men’s Discussion Group is to foster internalized dignity in gay men. We do this through the exploration of our shared challenges and opportunities using face to face discussions.

Why? Because we have a lot to talk about.

As a social minority, it is easy for us to live most of our daily lives immersed in an environment that is vastly different from our own cultural reality. The absence of images and stories portraying our often unique social and family structures – from news sources, commercial advertising, and main stream entertainment – can lead to feelings of isolation and powerlessness. Hearing our own experiences mirrored back to us by other gay men will help build on the self-respect we already possess.

Legal fights such as marriage equality and parental rights reinforce a homo-negative idea that our lives are incongruent with the dominant social culture. Unchecked, this can lead to demoralization, guilt, and self-destructive behavior. By learning from one another about the ongoing positive developments toward our shared goal of equality, we reinforce a sense of progress, self-worth, and brotherhood.

Outside of night clubs and AA meetings, there has not been a place in West Hollywood for gay men to gather socially. TRIBE will provide a community gathering environment currently unavailable in the City.

Disenfranchisement has had a negative effect on our mental and physical safety, but it has also spawned important cultural institutions such as the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center and The National Gay & Lesbian Task Force. It has also undoubtedly played a role in the formation of many of the dynamic cultural enclaves we enjoy that are part of our diverse culture. Our discussion group is intended to examine the good and bad of our ever changing relationship with marginalization and social stigma.

Love, dating, and sex can present unique interpersonal challenges for men who have sex with men. The members of this group will draw on their own experience and that of the other members of their Tribe to build intimacy and social dignity among its members.
