Summer Sounds


Between June 16 and August 18, the City of West Hollywood through its Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission will present the 2013 Summer Sounds concert performance series, which will take place outdoors throughout the summer at West Hollywood Park, Kings Road Park and Plummer Park.  All concerts are free to attend. Limited first come, first serve seating will be available, or alternately bring a picnic basket and a blanket to enjoy the show.

Concert dates, locations, and performers are as follows:



June 16, 2013 - 1 p.m.

West Hollywood Park, North Lawn.

As part of the One City One Pride arts festival, the City is kicking off the Summer Sounds series with a concert as part of the World's Largest Gay Father's Day Celebration. This family friendly event is open to all and will feature storytelling, information on family services, and a concert featuring the band Upstream. This concert is sponsored by LA County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky.


The band Upstream, whose members include two sons of the venerable inventor of Soca music, the late Ras Shorty I, was formed in the republic of Trinidad & Tobago in 1989. They relocated to Southern California in the early nineties and have made a name for themselves with their energetic eclectic style of Reggae and Soca. For more information, click here.




Dale Fielder Quintet

Saxophonist/Composer Dale Fielder has been called ‘one of the national jazz scene’s best kept secrets’.  He will perform with his award-winning band featuring jazz legend Jane Getz.  They will be performing tunes from their upcoming CD: “The Quickening” as well as their recently released, critically acclaimed CD “Each Time I Think of You” on the Clarion Jazz label. Jazz Bliss Brazil

July 7, 2013 - 4 p.m.

Jazz Bliss Brazil is an exciting eclectic ensemble pulsating with the vibrancy of classic American Jazz and the music of the Americas - chiefly Brazil. The quintet features the warm and engaging Carol Bach-y-Rita, singing in both Portuguese and English, and the lyrical saxophone & flute of Robert Kyle. Joining them are guitarist Mitchell Long, bassist Hussain Jiffry, and drummer/percussionist  Walter Rodriguez - three of the brightest stars on the “World Music” scene. Klezmer Juice

Klezmer Juice is vibrant Yiddish soul imbued with musical influences both old and new from around the world. Representing a new generation of Jewish soul musicians, the youthful group members see themselves as torchbearers of an ancient traditional craft that unites generations in spirit, offering fresh interpretations of traditional tunes. Inspired by the religious and secular life of his Argentine community, Gustavo Bulgach, who now lives in Los Angeles, has traveled around the globe, finding that Klezmer music is the “soundtrack of the Diaspora.” While remaining true to klezmer's Eastern European Jewish roots, Bulgach's Latin background and hipster credentials have also led to a busy career performing with other internationally-acclaimed acts. Sammy Miller

August 4, 2013- 4 p.m.

A native of Los Angeles, Sammy Miller has become known for his unique maturity and relentless focus on making music that “feels good” as a drummer, singer and bandleader. At the ripe old age of 20, Sammy has performed with Wynton Marsalis, Bobby Watson, David Benoit, Christian Scott, and Ozomatli at venues across the country, including the White House, the Kennedy Center, the Monterey Jazz Festival, and the Hollywood Bowl. In the Jazz World, Sam has been recognized with a number of honors, including the Los Angeles Jazz Society’s Shelly Manne Award, the Dolo Coker Scholarship and the 2009 Los Angeles Music Center’s Spotlight Award. A graduate of the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, Sammy is currently getting his Masters’ Degree at The Juilliard School. For more information, click here.




Louie Cruz Beltran

August 18, 2013 - 4:00 p.m.

Louie Cruz Beltran is a popular entertainer, bandleader, vocalist, and master percussionist who has appeared at top venues and festivals, including the 34th Annual Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl, the Oakland Jazz Festival, Catalina’s Jazz Club, and Herb Alpert’s Vibrato.  His CD “Paint The Rhythm” charted nationally, and continues to get airplay internationally.  Louie has provided entertainment for top corporate events and awards shows, including the after party for the Alma Awards, and the National Hispanic Media Coalition Impact Awards. For more information, click here.


Chairs are provided at all Summer Sounds events. The Parks are ideal picnic spots, so bring a blanket and a basket and enjoy! (Please note: City parks are alcohol free).

Kings Road Park: 1000 N. Kings Road (at Romaine St. 1 block south of Santa Monica Blvd). Parking: Kings Road parking structure and adjacent streets.

Plummer Park: 7377 Santa Monica Blvd. Free Parking in both Plummer Park parking lots accessible from Santa Monica Blvd. or Fountain Ave.
