The City of West Hollywood is committed to innovation and continues to look toward the future by integrating cutting-edge technologies into its infrastructure.
In 2016, the City adopted the Fiber Network Infrastructure and Service Strategic Plan, which identified the numerous benefits of a fast and affordable broadband network. These include improved internet access, enhanced public safety, greater equity, economic growth, healthcare connectivity, and Smart City applications—all focused on improving the quality of life for our community.
Recognizing that internet connectivity is essential to modern life, the City’s Information Technology Division has taken a leadership role in advancing fiber-optic internet—often referred to simply as fiber. The City has begun developing a municipal fiber network, and the early phases of this initiative are now complete.
Today, the City’s fiber-optic backbone spans the entire length of Santa Monica Boulevard, providing public Wi-Fi and connecting multiple City facilities. The network is also being integrated into the Design District Streetscape & Undergrounding Project, with Phase 1 already operational along Melrose Avenue between Croft Avenue and San Vicente Boulevard. Plans are underway to expand fiber connectivity to Sunset, Fountain, Fairfax, and La Brea.
Looking ahead, the City is exploring opportunities to expand this network even further in a new growth phase aimed at promoting digital equity—ensuring all members of our community have access to affordable, high-speed internet.
